Make a jar of za’atar and you will find yourself sprinkling it all over the place. It gives a nutty, herbal crunch to pita bread, hummus, baba ganoush, pan roasted chicken, salads…I’ve even sprinkled it on peanut butter and toast!

I’ve given the proportions that I like, but you can tweak the flavour to your own liking. 

Make it! Za'atar

A blend of toasted sesame seeds, sumac, thyme and oregano to use as a seasoning on just about anything.

  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp sumac
  • 1 tbsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp sea salt


  • Add sesame seeds to a pan on medium heat. Toast until golden.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  • Mix remaining ingredients together with the toasted sesame seeds and store in an air tight jar.
